DANVILLE —
A game-winning, walk-off hit is always an exciting moment.
But Ryan Black’s game-winning hit on Sunday for Danville Area Community College had an extra significance.
It not only gave the Jaguars a 4-3 victory over the Lincoln College Lynx, but the win snapped a losing trend for DACC, who swept the Mid-West Athletic Conference doubleheader with a 6-3 win in the nightcap.
“We have been playing like a team with a monkey on our back,’’ said DACC first-year coach Michael Dalton, whose team has lost 13 of its last 14 before Sunday’s sweep. “That big hit by Ryan Black got the monkey off our backs.
“I think you saw that in the way that we played in that second game.’’
Seven of the 13 losses for the Jaguars (24-22 overall, 11-16 in the M-WAC) during this stretch were by one run.
“It felt like we were doing all the right things during this stretch, but we couldn’t pull out a W,’’ Black said. “We did it right today and we got the win.’’
The biggest difference according to Dalton was that DACC finally got a big hit.
The Jaguars actually loaded the bases with no outs in the ninth, but Bobby Hansen lined out and Jake Houston popped out.
“It looked like we were going to go down the same path of not getting that big hit,’’ Dalton said. “But, Ryan did a great job of staying with it.’’
Black admitted he didn’t want to play another inning.
“I wasn’t about to let this happen to us,’’ he said. “When that ball got into left field, it felt like a big weight was off of our shoulders. It was awesome.’’
The Lynx (20-24, 16-12) took a 3-1 lead in the sixth inning on a two-run homer by Josh Cook.
But, the Jaguars responded and tied the game at 3-3 on an RBI triple from Rennie Troggio.
“We were hitting a lot of balls hard during this stretch,’’ Dalton said. “But, we had to stay positive and the guys did a good job of working through it. We were in a slump, but we knew that we would come out of it.
“The last week, we’ve been talking about someone needed to get a big hit. We’ve been struggling with that, and Rennie finally broke through for us.’’
Former Schlarman standout Aaron Lewellyn picked up the win for DACC with two shutout innings of relief.
Lewellyn also came back for two shutout innings in the second game, earning the save as Hunter Tipton picked up the win.
“No, I’ve never done that before and I didn’t expect to do it today,’’ he said. “But, I’m going to do whatever it takes for my team.’’
Lewellyn allowed just one hit, while walking two and striking out four in his four innings on Sunday.
“We’re just five games away from the region tournament and these were huge wins,’’ he said. “Hopefully, this will get us on a roll heading into it.’’
In the second game, Tanner Hahn’s run-scoring triple highlighted a three-run fifth inning for DACC.
The Jaguars also got two RBIs from Bobby Hansen and two hits and an RBI from Connor Weir.
“These wins were really important for our region seed,’’ Dalton said. “There are four teams bunched together in the middle and we need to separate ourselves from the pack.’’
DACC will host Kankakee in a makeup game on Wednesday before playing its final conference four-game series with Illinois Central College next weekend.
