DANVILLE —
The warm weather ignited the Danville Area Community College baseball team’s offense.
The Jaguars pounded out 18 hits and scored 19 runs in sweeping a doubleheader, 9-6 and 10-2, from the Lewis & Clark Blazers, in a Mid-West Athletic Conference twinbill on Sunday afternoon at Danville Stadium.
DACC coach Michael Dalton said the warm weather was a huge factor in his team’s success.
“Perfect Day,” Dalton said. “Warm weather. The guys were excited when they got out here, guys showed up early. They were ready for it to be nice and sunny and it was.”
The Jaguars offense got going in the first inning of game one thanks to walk and an error. Leadoff man Connor Weir walked and scored as a result of the error committed by the Blazers.
The offense then came to life as the Jaguars would plate three runs in the second and fourth innings and later tallied two insurance runs in the sixth.
Dalton was pleased that his team was able to put up crooked numbers in multiple innings.
“We talk about going round-by-round or inning-by-inning and today we did that we didn’t have very many zeroes,’’ Dalton said. “It was good to see that happen today.”
Rennie Troggio drove in two of his three RBIs with bunt singles. Weir matched Troggio with three RBIs of his own. Tanner Hahn drove in two runs and Blake Wadsworth had three hits and scored twice for the Jaguars.
Both the Blazers and Jaguars had the offense’s rolling in game one. The Blazers took advantage of an uncharacteristic outing from starter Clayton Hicks, who gave up four runs in 3Ï innings pitched.
Darwing Ereu picked up the win in relief by going two innings and allowing one run. Tanner Hahn got the final five outs to pick up the save for the Jaguars.
“Our starter kind of got blown up early today, and that’s unusual for him he has been great for us all year,’’ Dalton said. “Then Darwing Ereu came in and did an outstanding job for us today.”
In the second game, the Jaguar offense kept rolling, however the Blazers offense was shut down by starting pitcher Cam Wilson.
Wilson went the distance for the Jaguars and held down the Blazer offense, allowing two runs on only four hits.
“Cam did a great job for us in game two,’’ Dalton said. “We needed him to have a good outing and that’s exactly what he did.”
Weir got the offense rolling with a leadoff triple and scored on a Bobby Hanson RBI groundout.
The Jaguars plated two more runs in the second, three runs each in the fourth and fifth innings and one more tally, which ended the game due to the mercy rule, in the seventh.
Weir had a pair of triples and three RBIs and Alex Potter had two hits, including a home run over the left-field wall, and two RBIs to lead the Jaguar offense in game two.
Jake Houston and Brayton Caudill each had two hits and Tanner Hahn knocked in two runs, on a two-out triple to left in the second.
With the sweep, the Jaguars improve to 15-7 overall and 3-2 in the MWAC.
The Jaguars will return to action Tuesday to make up Saturday’s doubleheader with the Blazers in Godfrey.
