DANVILLE —
Missed opportunities can be a haunting experience for any team.
The Danville Area Community College softball team was left wondering on Thursday of what could have been in the Jaguars doubleheader with the Lincoln College Lynx.
After claiming the opener 7-2, DACC dropped the second game of the Mid-West Athletic Conference twinbill 2-1.
“Any conference win is important, but I thought this was an opportunity for us to get two,’’ DACC coach Dave Strebin said. “But, we had no intensity in the second game.’’
Not only was the loss a missed opportunity, but the actual game was classic example of a team failing to capitalize on its run-scoring chances.
The Jaguars, who are now 7-9 overall and 1-3 in the MWAC, had eight hits in the first three frame against Lynx starter Jana Wright.
“We couldn’t keep our offense going in the second game,’’ said DACC catcher Emily Jarvis, who went 3-for-8 with three RBIs in the doubleheader. “We have to keep scoring, you can’t let yourself get down.’’
Jarvis was one of three baserunners for DACC that were thrown out at home plate trying to score.
Former Westville standout Heathre Depratt, the center fielder for Lincoln, had one of those three assists for the Lynx, who are now 7-11 overall and 1-3 in the MWAC.
“It’s frustrating,’’ said DACC pitcher Brooke Jordan, who got the win in the opener and was 4-for-6 in the doubleheader. “We know that we have to stay focused, so that the next time we can capitalize and get that run across.
“If we could have gotten one or two runs across, we might have been able to keep it going, and gotten both of these games.’’
Strebin was disappointed in his team’s poor baserunning.
“We ran ourselves out of several innings,’’ he said.
Those missed chances became even bigger when the Jaguars managed only one hit off of Wright in the final four innings.
“Our bats were going early, but we have to stay strong throughout the entire game,’’ Jarvis said.
Depratt, who was 2-for-6 in the twinbill, scored both runs for the Lynx in their victory and had an impressive diving catch in the fifth inning, saving a run.
The opener was a combination of Jordan’s pitching and offensive contributions from the entire DACC offense.
Jordan allowed just two unearned runs on four hits while striking out 11 and walking just one.
“This is our home field and we wanted to play well here,’’ she said. “It was important to get our first conference win. We need to win more games like this to get into the top half of the league.’’
Jarvis, who was batting leadoff for the first time, provided all the offense that Jordan would need with a RBI groundout in the third and a two-run single to left in the fourth.
“Normally, I don’t bat leadoff, so being in that position with runners on base was something I was used to,’’ Jarvis said.
Strebin said it was good to see the bottom part of the order setting up the top.
“(Elisa) Ramos is our normal leadoff hitter and she is out with an ankle,’’ he said. “So, I had to rearrange the batting order and Emily did fine.’’
Jordan, Kim Curran and Alicia Fredericks all had run-scoring singles in the fourth for the Jaguars, while Morgan Ritchie and Erica Sieg each scored twice for DACC.
