Celebrate these unusual observances in 2013

Happy 2013. We certainly hope it will be a lucky year for you. We know that many of you probably got a calendar for the holidays. It has become a New Year's tradition in KidsPost to highlight some holidays and other special days that kids might be interested in but that probably didn't make the cut as an "official" holiday on your calendar.

JANUARY

7: Old Rock Day. Perhaps today you could start (or add to) a rock collection.

20: Inauguration Day. President Barack Obama will be sworn in to a second term as president. Because the 20th falls on a Sunday, the public ceremony will take place on the 21st on the steps of the Capitol.

23: Measure Your Feet Day. Are both your feet the same size? Bet you never thought to find out!

FEBRUARY

10: Chinese New Year welcomes in the Year of the Snake.

13: Get a Different Name Day. So if you really hate that Mom and Dad named you Buford T. Rex III, today's the day to do something about it.

23: International Dog Biscuit Appreciation Day. We suspect this is mostly celebrated by dogs.

MARCH

6: Oreo cookies were sold for the first time in 1912. Have a Double Stuf to celebrate.

14: It's Pi Day. Not as in apple or cherry. As in the number: 3.14!

APRIL

3: The first ice cream sundae was invented in New York 120 years ago today.

25: World Penguin Day. It's also Take Our Daughters and Sons to Work Day. We just don't think we should take penguins to work.

30: National Honesty Day. If we're lying, we're dying!

MAY

12: Mother's Day. Yes, this appears on the calendar you received, but we wanted to remind you because it would be really, really bad to forget!

18: It's International Museum Day.

23: Margaret Wise Brown was born on this day in 1910. Not sure who that is? We're pretty sure you know one of her books, "Goodnight Moon."

JUNE

6: National Yo-Yo Day.

16: Father's Day (see entry for Mother's Day!)

25: It's Leon Day. "Leon" is "Noel" spelled backward. It means that it's only six months till Christmas.

JULY

8: The Liberty Bell cracked while being rung on this day in 1835.

19: Stick Out Your Tongue Day. Just make sure you explain this to whomever you're sticking it out at!

20: Moon Day, marking the 44th anniversary of Neil Armstrong becoming the first person to land on the moon.

AUGUST

1: Respect for Parents Day. This really should be every day, but we know you know that.

11: Play in the Sand Day.

20: World Mosquito Day. We're not sure if this means you should love one or swat one!

SEPTEMBER

5: National Cheese Pizza Day.

19: Talk Like a Pirate Day. Ahoy, matey!

23: Nintendo was founded on this date in 1889. Their first product wasn't the Wii; it was playing cards.

OCTOBER

1: It's Homemade Cookies Day and World Vegetarian Day, so why not make (and eat) oatmeal raisin cookies in honor of both!

15: National Grouch Day. But that doesn't mean you have to be one!

28: The Statue of Liberty was dedicated on this day in 1886.

NOVEMBER

15: Pack Your Mom Lunch Day. Be sure to include something sweet!

17: It's Homemade Bread Day and Take a Hike Day, so pack some sandwiches and hit the trail.

25: Marc Brown was born on this day in 1946, and aardvarks named Arthur everywhere celebrate!

DECEMBER

1: Eat a Red Apple Day. If you prefer yellow apples, we think that's OK.

13: National Cocoa Day. We feel warm and toasty just thinking about it.

31: New Year's Eve. We've made it through another year.
