Reach out to someone

DANVILLE — Today is Valentine’s Day, a holiday for us to let people in our lives know how much we care about them.

From pre-schoolers to senior citizens, red hearts will be everywhere today … almost.

There will be some people for whom the holiday will be just another 24 hours of emptiness.

It might be a veteran living far from his or her family, trying to become healthy once again at the VA’s Illiana Heath Care System in Danville.

It might be a resident at a local nursing home with no family to speak of, who travels through his or her days where loneliness fills the hours.

It could be a neighbor living alone, a friend who just suffered a loss or a co-worker trying to overcome personal issues.

Today is the day everyone needs to hear that they matter to someone.

Volunteers will visit the VA today to chat with veterans and thank them for their service. But there will be plenty of other opportunities to reach out to another person.

No one needs big boxes of chocolates, strands of expensive gems or dozens of roses to know they matter to someone else.

While those trappings of the holiday are nice, and receiving one or any of them are fun, all it really takes is a phone call, an e-mail or a simple card to lets others know you are thinking of them.

Today’s technology can keep us separated from others in our lives. We can start to take others for granted. But not today. Make that call. Drop by for a visit. Just say hello … and Happy Valentine’s Day.
