City begins to see repayment

DANVILLE — Danville city officials made a hefty investment in a development on North Vermilion Street that, when complete, will include new retail stores for Kohl’s, Meijer and T.J. Maxx.

The city will begin to see some return on that investment soon.

Kohl’s has planned a series of job fairs beginning Saturday in its search to fill about 105 jobs.

The people who take those jobs will spend money locally, providing support for other businesses.

The sales tax revenue generated by Kohl’s will help the city and other local governmental bodies ease their cash crunch.

Businesses in the general area of the development — on North Vermilion Street where K’s Merchandise once stood — stand to see more sales through the increased traffic past their stores.

Officials say their investment in the Kohl’s development alone, which exceeds $1 million, will be repaid within the next five years.

Judging from the type of reaction local shoppers generally give to new stores, that timeline might be a bit long.

Those looking for jobs can visit the job fair at Hampton Inn Suites on Eastgate Drive, just off Lynch Road.

The days and times will be: 10:45 a.m.-6:30 p.m. Saturday; 10:45 a.m.-7:30 p.m., Sunday; 11:45 a.m.-7:30 p.m. Monday; and 8:45 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Tuesday and Wednesday.

All of those positions also should help cut the city and county’s unemployment rate, with more to come as Ross Dress for Less in the Village Mall, T.J. Maxx and Meijer prepare to hire their own staffs.

Not every investment pays off well. This one looks like a winner.
