Help stop flu's march this winter

DANVILLE — Everyone seems to be battling the flu bug this season — or some kind of illness that causes weeks of coughs, runny noses and exhaustion.

This year’s flu season appears to be a bit worse than usual, just from the number of co-workers and friends laid low by the bug.

Illinois and Indiana health experts each cite the flu as the cause of numerous deaths in their respective states, proving the illness is nothing to take lightly.

With that in mind, here’s a couple of practical ways to protect yourself and at least try to stop the spread of sickness.

Wash your hands. Often. Use hot water and soap. Scrub.

If hot water and soap are not available, use hand sanitzer.

Cover your mouth when you cough. Don’t use the palm side of your hand. That only helps spread the virus the next time you touch something.

Cough into the crook of your arm. It looks weird, but it doesn’t spread germs.

Stay home if you’re sick. No one likes a hero who shuffles into the office spreading the flu near and far just to prove how dedicated he is.

Call your physician if things take a turn for the worse. The flu can move fast. Don’t mess with it.

According to the calendar, spring is officially 45 days away. We, like everyone else, hope the flu bug departs long before then.
