Mother Nature apparently wants people to remember the pleasure of late summer by providing day after day of beautiful weather. Organizers of the Vermilion River Fall Festival appreciate the help.
Staged at Danville’s Ellsworth Park, the festival provides one of the last big events for the city.
And this year, its proceeds will go toward solidifying the festival’s financial future and provide some help for the Fischer Theatre’s restoration.
The fall festival offers a variety of attractions, from entertainment to food to a wide assortment of crafts.
The festival serves to usher in the first real elements of fall, with vendors offering mums, pumpkins and other items with an autumn theme.
With proceeds going to help both the festival and the Fischer, it’s a stop worth making.
Also Saturday, Danville High School will serve as host to its annual marching band contest on the school’s football field.
A dozen or so high school marching bands will show off their musical talent and choreography as they compete for the title.
It’s easy to think of a football field as being used only for sport, but these band members compete just as fiercely as any classmate in pads and a
helmet.
The level of their talent makes for an enjoyable afternoon and — once again — admission fees go to help a good cause: the music programs at Danville High School.
Organizers of other fall events — such as Civil War Days coming up on the last weekend of the month and the Apple Fest in Covington, Ind., on Oct. 3 — must be keeping their fingers crossed that the glorious weather over east central Illinois and west central Indiana holds on for their festivities.
In any case, the local calendar provides many opportunities to get out and enjoy the last warm weeks of the season.
