Help DACC celebrate

DANVILLE — If the campus of Danville Area Community College looks a bit busier than usual Saturday, it’s due to all of the former students coming back for a visit during the school’s first homecoming in more than 30 years.

The events will run 2-5 p.m. on the East Main Street campus.

The day will include tours, food, a video memories booth, activities for children and basketball games with the current men’s and women’s teams facing players from years gone by.

DACC’s role in the community continues to grow. It continues to provide quality higher education and has expended its scope to offer area residents job training opportunities in a variety of professions.

The homecoming event holds potential to expand enough to include the entire community. Additional events and attractions — both on and off campus — would serve to attract even more former students from the school’s 66-year history. That would allow area businesses and organizations to show off a bit while informing former students and their families about what the area has to offer.

Maybe the event will grow enough to include a traditional homecoming parade that could makes its way through campus as well as visit the Veterans Affairs Illiana Health Care System next door so the veterans at the medical center can enjoy the festivities as well.

Even if you’re not a former student at DACC or its predecessor, Danville Junior College, stop by the campus Saturday afternoon to see all the school has to offer. It really has become a major asset in our community.
