The success of this year’s Danville High School football team provides the community something to celebrate and provides another point of pride for the school itself.
But the successes reach far beyond the white lines of the football field.
Head coach B.J. Luke and his staff of coaches expect their players not only to work hard on the gridiron but in the classroom as well.
Players must achieve acceptable grades in their classes in order to be eligible to suit up. And their behavior outside of school hours also must present the school — and more important, themselves — well.
The stereotype of gifted athletes who can behave however they might like does not exist. Football players, as well as members of all athletic teams, must earn the privilege to represent their school in competition.
The lessons coach Luke and his staff are teaching will serve these students for years beyond their playing days. That makes them winners off and on the field.
