Help fill shelves at food pantry

DANVILLE — Area residents can take advantage of an opportunity today and Saturday to help their neighbors in need by contributing to the Danville Area Food Pantry’s 14th annual Frostbite Marathon.

A truck will be set up from 8 a.m. until 7 p.m. today and Saturday at the County Market store in downtown Danville’s Towne Centre. Collection barrels also will be placed at the county Market locations at the Village Mall and in Tilton.

This year’s demand for the food pantry’s services continues to grow. Officials at the pantry say the facility might have to close within a few weeks if their contribution campaign fails to bring in enough food.

Non-perishable items are needed to fill the shelves. County Market has put together bags of the most-needed items for $5 per bag at its locations to help those who might not know what to donate.

The food pantry’s drive, along with that of other food pantries in the area, reflect the need so many of our neighbors still feel, particularly at this time of the year.

Just a few cans of food, jars of peanut butter or other staples make a difference when they are added to the donations from many others. For information about the drive, contact Chuck Brooks at 442-4031.

Our community often shows its generosity and compassion by the way it responds to requests for help. From the United Way to The Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign to school projects and food drives, people step up and give — even if it’s just a little.

Add what you can today and Saturday to the Danville Area Food Pantry’s Frostbite Marathon. Your contribution makes a real difference in local families’ lives.
