David and Connie Hawkins of Oakwood announce the engagement of their daughter, Kristen, to Nicholas Gaines. He is the son of Jeff Gaines of Mattoon and Mickey Gaines of Mattoon.

The couple plans a Feb. 9, 2013, wedding at the Alice Campbell Alumni Center in Urbana.

Kristen is a 2002 graduate of Oakwood High School. She received a bachelor’s of journalism degree with an emphasis in strategic communication from the University of Missouri in 2006. She is employed as a major account executive with CareerBuilder in Chicago.

Nicholas is a 1999 graduate of Mattoon High School. He received a bachelor’s in political science from the University of Illinois in 2003, a special education teaching certificate from Eastern Illinois University, and a master’s of educational administration and supervision degree from National Louis University. He is employed as an executive director of product innovation and development with Modern Teacher in Chicago.
