HOOPESTON —
Michael Streff, engineer for Foth Infrastructure & Environmental, updated council members Tuesday on improvement plans for the city’s water treatment tanks.
"All documents were sent to the EPA," Streff said. "We are just waiting for Chad Rice to review it."
He added Rice said he should have it reviewed by the end of this month and that Hoopeston should receive the documents to apply for funding for the project, part of the $1.3 billion allotted for this type of work.
Steve Baker, superintendent of the sewer and water department, said, "During this process (water treatment tank repairs), we will have rust. There will be pressure problems but we will continue to supply city water to the residents."
"Once approved by the EPA," Streff said, "we can get bids, probably in the Spring, and can identify when there will be interruptions of service."
In other business, council members:
Learned the city pool has four leaks in the gutters, according to United Leak Protection, and a minimum quote of $4,250 would be the cost to repair unless more problems were found once the company got into the gutters. Eugene Warner, superintendent of the parks department, commented it was going to be higher than this quote because he knew there was one more leak.
Learned a parks committee meeting will begin at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 23, at City Hall, to discuss ideas on the Civic Center. Several people have contacted Alderman Carl Ankenbrand about keeping the Civic Center open at night for walkers. This will be discussed. The session will be open to the public.
Learned the state video gambling games located in several businesses has generated $1,267 for Hoopeston from 11 machines and that two more establishments are waiting for gaming licenses.
Learned the mayor of Champaign sent a letter to Hoopeston noting the formation of a coalition to designate Mahomet as an aquifer. Since Hoopeston’s water comes from the Mahomet aquifer, the letter asked Hoopeston to join the coalition. Members of the council requested Mayor Bill Crusinberry to contact the Champaign mayor for a brief presentation, possibly at 6 p.m. before a regular council meeting.
