Hoopeston Area board approves schools’ tax levy

HOOPESTON — Hoopeston Area school board members approved unanimously the estimated tax levy for 2012 at Thursday’s meeting.

The estimated total property taxes to be levied for 2012 are $3,189,000, an 8.7 percent increase over the previous year, according to Superintendent Hank Hornbeck. Last year the total property taxes received by the school district were $2,933,758.

"We need every penny we get this year with the state cutting funds," Hornbeck said.

Next month, board members will update the tax levy, if it is necessary, and set a tax levy hearing date. Board members will then adopt the tax levy at the November board meeting.

In other board business, board members:

Approved unanimously the school district budget for 2013.

Approved the modified teacher evaluation instrument for the 2012-2013 school year, the administrator and teacher salary and benefits report, and the administration compensation report for the 2012-2013 school year. The salary and benefits reports, said Hornbeck, are now required by law to be placed online.

Unanimously approved Rosellen Cornelius as the local election official for the April 9, 2013, school board elections. Four members of the school board are up for re-election next year: Russell Walder, Larry Jahn, Lisa Leigh and Stewart Kaufman.

Learned that the six-day enrollment comparisons shows the school district lost 57 students from last year’s totals during the same period. A check of the records shows that a release of records due to transfers to other school is the reason.

"Basically it’s just an economic situation," said high school principal Larry Maynard. "People are moving for jobs or students change who they are living with to other districts."

Learned the Hoopeston School District joined Georgetown-Ridge Farm, Rossville-Alvin, Bismarck-Henning and Paris to discuss long term options for the school districts. According to board president Russell Walder, Rossville-Alvin is looking at a more permanent long-term option for its school district.

"We are investigating all opportunities," Walder said. "Actively participating in the discussion."

Learned that the purchase of a greenhouse is being considered in the near future for the Ag. Department. A $5,000 grant was received toward its purchase, according to Mark Eighner, transportation/building and grounds.

Hoopeston Area school board members will meet at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 18, at Honeywell Grade School.
