State should cut costs, raise taxes

Editor:

No one likes to hear the dirty word “taxes.”

No one likes to pay taxes. But most of us like what taxes provide for us if tax money is spent responsibly, such as good roads, good schools, nice parks, police and fire departments, and numerous other things we often take for granted.

Our city, state and country are in dire straits financially.

Our legislators want to be re-elected, so some argue against raising taxes and suggest cutting spending instead.

We never hear much about how to do this because when programs are cut, votes are lost also.

So why not do both, so all sides are represented (and resented)?

Raise taxes some and cut all programs that don’t benefit the majority of the people until we’re out of this mess.

We, as citizens, have to make sacrifices — and our legislators have to find the courage to put politics aside and do what needs to be done for our city, our state and our country if we want things to get better and not worse.
