Don’t mix policy and religion

Editor:

Religion has no place in public policy.

Religion and politics are the very subjects that cause many a man to do things that under normal circumstances he would never do.

There are far too many for me to cite here, but I will mention a few. Whether you are a Catholic, Protestant, Jew or of the Islamic faith or other, please understand, this is not an attack upon your faith. I have absolutely no interest in stifling your practices or any other constraint upon your worshipping; however, I plead for the same thing from the religious world.

I agree on many stances, but I remember that there are hundreds of people who do not feel as I do. This is where tolerance must come into play. Each individual is free to choose as he or she sees fit, not as religious leaders see fit. They are free to push their dogmas in their churches or mosques or halls or whatever name a particular group call its place of worship.

Presently, we have small numbers of fanatics killing doctors in the name of their God, defining laws for people to marry or not, and calling others’ behavior sinful. We must not confuse religious ideology with the laws of our land.
