Lafayette Shaw, an extraordinary citizen, was a remarkable example of what we admired and cherished about people of his generation.

He stood for something and not just anything.

He fought for the underdog and the least among us.

He rallied against inequality and injustice, and never lost sight of how far we have come and how far we have yet to go.

I was often struck by his recollections of the challenging times in our community, the unpopular issues that ultimately made Danville a better place.

The world is a better place because of Lafayette and he will be missed.

Lafayette Shaw had moral courage, the conviction of a true statesman and the audacity to simply tell it like it was.

We will all miss his sense of humor, his devout love for his community and church, and his undying commitment to the local Elks organization.

Mr. Shaw was a dedicated family man who unconditionally loved his children, adored his grandchildren and dearly loved and cherished his beautiful wife.

That’s the Lafayette Shaw I had great admiration for and will always remember.

The Jaycees organization has a creed that represents the foundation of its philosophy.

Within that creed is the fundamental belief that “the service to humanity is the best work of life.”

Thank you for your service to humanity, Mr. Shaw. May God bless his life and may he rest in peace.
