DANVILLE —
The Red Mask Players, one of the oldest community theater groups in the state, has announced its 2011-2012 season, which marks the organization’s 75th year.
The season includes three popular shows the players have performed in the past.
- “All My Sons,” from the group’s first 25 years, is an American classic drama by Arthur Miller. Performance dates are Nov. 4-6, 11-13, 18-19.
The setting is the late 1940s. During WW II, Joe Keller and Herbert Deever ran a machine shop that made airplane parts. Deever was sent to prison because the firm turned out defective parts, causing the deaths of many men. Keller went free and made a lot of money. The love affair of Chris Keller and Ann Deever, the bitterness of George Deever returned from the war to find his father in prison and his father’s partner free, are all set in a structure of almost unbearable power.
“All My Sons” is directed by Dave Downing. Audition dates are at 7 p.m. Sunday and Monday at the Kathryn Randolph Theatre at 601 N. Vermilion St. There are roles for six men and four women.
- “The Girls in 509,” from the group’s second 25 years, is a political comedy that is still relevant today. Performance dates will be Jan. 20-22, 27-29 and Feb. 3-4.
Two ladies are discovered in the back suite of a once-fashionable hotel in New York that is being demolished. They have been there since 1932 when Hoover lost and have vowed to remain secluded until a Republican is elected. The press and the National Chairmen of the Republican and Democratic parties descend upon the ladies, members of one of the country’s oldest and richest families. The ladies defy both politicians and face eviction and disgrace in this delightful comedy.
“The Girls in 509” is directed by Debbie Prentice. Audition dates are at 7 p.m. Nov. 20 and Nov. 21 at the Kathryn Randolph Theatre. There are roles for nine men and three women.
“The Girls in 509” was the first show presented in the Kathryn Randolph Theatre, Red Mask’s current home.
- “Rumors,” from the past 25 years, is a farce by Neil Simon. Performance dates will be March 23-25, 30-31 and April 1, 6-7.
At a large, tastefully appointed Sneden’s Landing townhouse, the deputy mayor of New York has just shot himself. It’s only a flesh wound, but the four couples gathered there are about to experience a severe attack of farce: The host lies bleeding upstairs, his wife is nowhere in sight and his lawyer, Ken, and wife, Chris, must get the “story” straight before the other guests arrive. As the confusions and miscommunication mount, the evening spins off into classic farcical hilarity.
“Rumors” is directed by Sue Harden. Audition dates are at 7 p.m. Jan. 29 and 30 at the theater. There are roles for five men and five women.
