DANVILLE —
A local man faces attempted murder charges following a domestic disturbance just before 8:30 p.m. Wednesday.
Michael Obergfell, 36, of the 300 block of North Alexander Street, faces felony charges of aggravated battery with a deadly weapon and attempted first-degree murder.
State’s Attorney Randy Brinegar said Obergfell is accused of stabbing a woman with an ice pick in the 300 block of North Alexander Street.
The victim is Obergfell’s mother, Marie. She suffered wounds to her head. She was treated and released at a local hospital, according to Doug Miller, deputy director of the Danville Police Department.
Brinegar said the attempted murder charge comes from comments made by Obergfell during the alleged incident in which he is believed to have stated he was going to kill the victim.
Obergfell, who was still in custody, appeared in circuit court Friday afternoon for arraignment proceedings on the charges in addition to two misdemeanor counts of domestic battery.
If convicted, the attempted murder charge is a Class X felony carrying with it a maximum punishment of 30 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections. Aggravated battery with a deadly weapon is punishable by up to five years in state prison.
This is the only felony case filed against Obergfell in Vermilion County. In 2009, he was arrested and charged with two counts of misdemeanor domestic battery. The counts were dismissed in February of this year.
Obergfell also was charged with two counts of misdemeanor domestic battery in 1998. Those charges were dropped after he entered a guilty plea to a third charge of obstructing an officer for which he received one year of conditional discharge.
In Champaign County, Obergfell was found guilty on a felony charge of theft in 2007 and a misdemeanor charge in 2002. A 2006 property damage charge was dismissed.
