ATTICA, Ind. —
A 46-year career in education comes to a close as Judy Bush retires as superintendent of the Attica Consolidated School District.
“All of my work was secondary (before Attica),” she said “I wanted the experience of K-12. I wanted the experience at all school levels.”
Bush is proud of her 12 years in Attica, where two days after she arrived the district broke ground at the high school for an auditorium, auxiliary gymnasium and six more classrooms.
Improvements have continued.
“In 2005, we totally revamped the elementary school,” she said. “We put in all new doors and windows, lighting and heating system.”
Bush’s office moved out of the elementary building into a separate new building at the high school site.
Enrollment has declined at Attica.
“We are down about 100 kids (from when I started),” Bush said. She said the numbers are starting to go up again.
She said her stay in Attica has been “interesting and fun.” She said Attica is smaller than Vigo County, where she taught for 34 years, and was an administrator at Woodrow Wilson and Chauncey Rose middle schools and Terre Haute North Vigo High School.
She started a pre-school at Attica and made kindergarten full-time for everyone.
“We have maintained technology in teaching and next year at the high school we will be providing a laptop for every high school student,” she said. “The kids will have the resources right with them.”
Jerry Mattern, school board president, praised Bush for the “way you guided the corporation. We were shaped by your leadership.”
Mattern spoke at a surprise recognition of Bush on the next to last day of school at Attica High School.
“It is with great dedication that we thank you for all you have done,” he said.
Mayor Bob Shepherd thanked her for her contribution to the city.
“She is a very positive person,” he said. “She is always there. I would like to thank her and give her the key to the city.”
Bush said she had many good teachers while a student at Clinton High School.
“They made learning fun,” she said. “I had the influence of many good teachers. I always wanted to be in a career that made a difference.”
She and her husband bought three acres near their daughter south of Bloomington, Ind., and they will be moving there. She will remain active in her duties with the Lutheran Church and the Rotary.
Bush has no regrets about coming to Attica.
“I am a hands-on person,” she said. “It was quite a change.
“This has been a great experience. Attica has been a very good community for us.”
