Catlin delays action on parking law

CATLIN — With two commissioners absent from Tuesday night’s meeting, the Catlin village council tabled action on a new ordinance to regulate parking on public lots.

The ordinance is designed to give Catlin police the authority to cut down on the loitering, cruising through and littering that has been plaguing public parking lots in the village.

The concerns are mainly around the parking lot located outside of the Catlin IGA.

The council will take up the matter again at its Oct. 16 meeting.

Police Chief Cash Cook presented the council with information on a new police car for the village.

According to Cook, after comparing prices on Chevrolet, Ford and Dodge police cruisers, the lowest cost was a 2013 Dodge Charger for $22,327 from Thomas Dodge in Highland Park, Ind.

Cook said the Dodge was the best choice because a lot of the options that are needed on a police cruiser are already included in the Dodge. Cook said it would take about six weeks to get the car once it is ordered.

The new car would replace one of the two police vehicles the village has.

Council tabled action on the proposal until all commissioners could look at the proposal.

In other council action, commissioners:

  • Approved having village employees grade along the north side of the park pavilion in order to improve the drainage around the building.

The work will consist of changing the slope away from the building as well as seeding and putting straw down.

  • Approved two bids from Simmons Tree Service of Catlin. The first bid was for trimming a tree on the Catlin IGA parking lot at a cost of $100. The second was for trimming a tree at the northwest corner of Vermilion and Webster streets at a cost of $150.
  • Learned that the village engineer from Sodemann and Associates will be at the next council meeting to discuss the village’s 10-year street improvement plan.
  • Learned that applications will be accepted until 5 p.m. Oct. 19 for village clerk. Also, petition packets are available in the village clerk’s office for three unexpired commissioner terms to be elected in the next municipal election. The terms will be for two years.
  • Set trick-or-treat hours from 4-8 p.m. Oct. 31

Commissioners Barry Voorhees and Jim Miller were absent.

What’s next

The Catlin Village Council will meet at 7 p.m. Oct. 16 at the village hall.
