WW II re-enactors to visit Kennekuk

DANVILLE — Kennekuk County Park will flash back to the past this weekend with the Kennekuk World War II Remembrance Days.

The first-year event is scheduled to take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday at the Bunker Hill Historic Area. This is no charge to attend.

Participants in the event come from three World War II re-enactment groups: the 33rd Division, B Company 130th Infantry; the Great Lakes WAVES (Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service); and the 581 Felgendarmerie (German field police). Re-enactors of Russian soldiers also will be participate.

More than 200 re-enactors are expected to attend the event, which will include a number of public battles and tactical skirmishes.

Don Smith is among the coordinators for the event. He said each of the Bunker Hill buildings will offer some display or information, including the Axis and Allied headquarters.

Re-enactors are expected as far away as Minnesota as well as Indiana, Missouri and northern Illinois. Set up for the event was expected this morning.

“We trying to have something for a lot of the people to come and see,” Smith said. “They can learn something about history and World War II.”

Smith said the re-enactors and displays will focus on the years of 1939-1945.

A tactical skirmish will be staged in the woods nearby on Saturday and, weather permitting, on Sunday as well.

The Atwood House will feature a very large home-front exhibit and several women’s WAVES uniforms will be on display in the Bunker Hill barber shop. Medical personnel and a military chaplain will be in the church with services conducted by the military chaplain scheduled for 9:30 a.m. Sunday.

Saturday night’s events will end with a USO dance from 7-11 p.m. at the Laury Barn. Smith said the public is welcome to attend the dance. Period attire is not required.
