DANVILLE —
The Danville Light Opera’s 2011 dinner theater production, “A … My Name Will Always Be Alice,” will give everyone an opportunity to beat the winter blues and celebrate Valentine season with an evening of pure enjoyment.
Performances will be Feb. 18 through Feb. 20 in the Bremer Center auditorium at Danville Area Community College.
This updated risqué musical revue about the joys and challenges of womanhood offers a variety of musical and acting performances.
Times are 6:30 p.m. for dinner on Feb. 18; 11:30 a.m. brunch and 6:30 p.m. dinner on Feb. 19; and 12:30 p.m. dinner on Feb. 20.
Doors open one-half hour prior to meal times, and the show will start following the meal.
The Danville Boat Club will cater the food. The dinner menu includes a choice of chicken or fish and a variety of side dishes and desserts. The brunch buffet will include ham, cheese ravioli, vegetable quiche, and other selections.
“A … My Name Will Always Be Alice” begins with a rousing girl-power anthem — “All Girl Band” — and takes the audience from teenage angst and bliss to relationships and parenthood, to daydreams and dreams come true.
The audience will see their mother, sister, wife, best friend, co-worker or daughter in the myriad characters the cast brings to life.
Anne Meara, a celebrated comedian and mother of Ben Stiller, was one of the sketch writers for the play.
The all-women cast includes Jeanne Dunn, Stefanie LaReau, Jenny Taylor, Sarah Torbeck, Gretchen Wesner and Flyn Williams. Stephanie Keller is the director and Lisa Osborne is the producer.
“The ladies in this show are braver than any performers I’ve ever met,” Keller said. “They’re always willing to put it all out there. We’ve had tears, laughter and nerves, and all because the show is us.”
Wesner, as do all the characters, plays multiple roles in the show, including a 15-year-old girl who’s never been on a date, a feminist poet, a psychiatrist, an office worker, and an entertainer. “It’s a lot of fun to do different things all in one show,” she said.
This is Wesner’s third DLO show, and she’s also performed at Red Mask and in Lincoln Park Theater’s “Alice in Wonderland.”
“Working with Stephanie as director is great,” Wesner said. “While this is her first time directing an adult show, she has so much experience both on and off stage. And keeping this group of nutty women under control is certainly a challenge that she’s done a great job with.
“I’m just grateful that Danville offers so much for people who appreciate the arts,” Wesner said. “There are not many towns this size that offer so many avenues for creativity. The only limit is how much time you can devote to it.”
Keller added, “This musical revue will provide a fun time for everybody. There’s a lot of great music and acting performed by a very talented cast.”
