Mitton takes on incumbent

WILLIAMSPORT, Ind. — Republicans in Warren County must decide between incumbents and challengers in two commissioner districts.

Incumbent Anton “Tony” Briles faces challenger Dave “Meathead” Mitton in the first district, while incumbent Thomas A. Hetrick faces challenger Ronald Haddock in the second district.

Democrats have not filed for either position.

Only Mitton responded to a Commercial-News survey sent to all candidates in contested races.

“It is something I always wanted to do,” Mitton said of his decision to run. “I hear complaints from people all around the county, and the solutions in the past are not working.”

Mitton said road conditions and spending are the biggest issues facing Warren County.

“With only around 8,000 people in the county, we don’t have a lot of money to start with,” he said. “Stop wasting money on equipment not needed. Why would you want to buy a new paving machine when you don’t have the money to put the material through it. We need to utilize what we have.”

Mitton doesn’t see growth in Warren County.

“That is an impossible question,” he said. “Warren County is a farming county. Sure, we have a few factories around West Lebanon and Williamsport. Everyone else goes to Danville or Lafayette. With the price of grain and land being so high, there’s not a farmer around that would sell his land to a factory that may be in business for four or five years and then go belly up taking that land out of production.”
