Dyslexia workshop set
Danville Area Community College’s Reader’s Route will present a short-term workshop on dyslexia from noon to 4 p.m. Tuesday in Room 115 of the Prairie Hall Literacy Lab.
The workshop is primarily for tutors, but the public may attend. The workshop will cover the signs of dyslexia and allow participants to experience what dyslexia is like. Attendees also will view an hour-long video.

Benefit helps Houldridges
A benefit for the Houldridge family is set for 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday at Sarge’s Tap, 409 E. Main St.
Proceeds will benefit Darrel and Donna Houldridge, who lost their son Dakota in an accident Nov. 6.
The benefit will feature a 50/50 drawing, karaoke and DJ, bands and bake sale. Barbecue will be available for a $4 per plate donation. An auction will start at 4 p.m. Call Kevin’s Auto Sales at 431-8282 for more information.
Lions Club features chorus
The Bismarck-Henning High School chorus will perform during the Danville Lions Club meeting at noon Tuesday at the Days Hotel, 77 N. Gilbert St.
Concert signups due soon
Downtown Danville Inc.’s Summer Sounds Concert Series will continue in 2013 with the first tentatively scheduled for May 24. Other tentative concert dates include: June 7, June 21, July 5, July 19 and Aug. 2.
Bands interested in performing should send information to info@downtowndanville.org by Dec. 31 to be considered.
Academy plans first bazaar
Kenneth D. Bailey Academy’s first annual Holiday Bazaar from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Thursday in the school gymnasium, 502 E. Main St.
More than 20 vendors will be set up for cash-and-carry items. Some vendors include: Tastefully Simple, 31 Gifts, Scentsy, Lia Sophia, Park Lane, Cupcakes by Julie, Photography by Michelle Garrison, Purses and More by Tracy Cherry and more.
Veterans meeting nears
Another veterans meeting will take place at 9 a.m. Tuesday at the Vermilion County War Museum, 307 N. Vermilion St.
Topic: “The Civil War and the Laws that changed it,” a presentation by noted local historian Tim Smith. Coffee and donuts will be served.
Grotto to serve tenderloins
The Gao Grotto will serve hamburgers or tenderloins with baked beans and french fries from 5:30-7:30 p.m. Friday. Price: $6.
Society plans open house
Vermilion County Museum Society will host its Holiday Open House from 1:30-4 p.m. Saturday at the facility, 116 N. Gilbert St.
Santa will bring two of his reindeer which love to be petted. Photo opportunities will be available. In the museum building, Santa Claus will greet visitors. Children will receive small treats. During the afternoon, guests are encouraged to visit the old-fashioned toy display. There will be performances at 2 p.m. by Jodi’s Dance Unlimited and 3 p.m. by Marilyn’s Danceworks. Light refreshments will be served.
In the Fithian Home, costumed characters from Vermilion County’s past will entertain. A group from Danville Light Opera will sing songs in the parlor.

YMCA has open enrollment
Starting Monday, the Danville Family YMCA will have open enrollment for winter session programs. Members may start enrolling Monday. Enrollment opens for non-members on Dec. 17.
The first week of programs begins Jan. 7. Programs include: gymnastics, Tae Kwon Do, Qi Gong, yoga, Pilates, home school physical education, grappling and swim lessons.

District to discuss tax levy
The Georgetown-Ridge Farm School District 4 will have a public hearing at 7 p.m. Monday to discuss the tax levy. The meeting will be in the superintendent’s office at 400 W. West St.
Township offers assistance
Georgetown Township will host a South County Power Blitz from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday in the township office, 1805 N. Main St.
Those who have not received help this fall from Community Action and their 30-day income falls within the guidelines below should plan to attend. Bring proof of income, Social Security cards for everyone in the household and a current power bill.
Income guidelines: one in family: $1,361; two: $1,839; three: $2,316; four: 2,794; five: $3,271; six: $3,749; seven: $4,226; eight: $4,704.
Boosters plan breakfast
The Georgetown-Ridge Farm Music Boosters will have their second annual “Breakfast with Santa” from 8-11 a.m. Dec. 15 at Pinecrest Elementary.
Menu: pancakes, sausage, juice and milk. Children can participate in games and crafts and take a photo with Santa.

Jaycees seek applicants
The Hoopeston Jaycees seek female Hoopeston area high school graduates ages 18-20 to be candidates for Miss Hoopeston 2013.
A mandatory informational meeting is set for Dec. 15. Judging will be Jan. 5, 2013. Applications must be filled out electronically by 5 p.m. Friday at http://www.hoopestonjaycees.org.

A foodservice sanitation manager’s course will be offered from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. today and Wednesday at ILEAS Training Center, 1701 E. Main St. The exam will be from 9-11 a.m. Dec. 17 at ILEAS.
Persons needing recertification for their Illinois Department of Public Health certificate may attend from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday.

Committee plans bake sale
The Westville Depot Restoration Committee will have its Christmas Bake Sale starting at 9 a.m. Saturday at the depot.
Santa will be there from 10-11 a.m. The event will feature a 50/50 drawing at about 1 p.m. The winner will be called. Tickets can be purchased from any member of the committee.
Donations of baked goods are needed. People may bring in donations from 6-8 p.m. Friday or at 8 a.m. Saturday.
