Argument leaves man dead near Tilton

TILTON — An argument led to the death of a man after a shooting east of Tilton on Wednesday.

Vermilion County Sheriff Pat Hartshorn said Wednesday night that two men who were related to one another began arguing about 4 p.m. Wednesday about a house on East 13th Street, just outside the Tilton village limit.

Vermilion County Coroner Peggy Johnson identified the dead man as Donnie Leroy Davis.

Davis was shot multiple times, Hartshorn said. The shooter then fled into a wooded area near the Vermilion River. Police later arrested him shortly before 7 p.m. Wednesday at a house on Perrysville Road.

The victim was taken to Provena United Samaritans Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 4:36 p.m. An autopsy is scheduled for today.

Hospital officials limited access to the emergency room for about two hours following the shooting, according to Gretchen Yordy, Provena’s director of marketing.

Hartshorn said police continue their investigation in conjunction with Johnson’s office.

Memorial Day is a time to remember the men and women who died while serving in the U.S. armed forces.
