DANVILLE — A bus shelter Danville Mass Transit received funding for last year has yet to be constructed.
But that’s not stopping the city department from requesting even more funding for another shelter in the community.
DMT Director Dick Brazda said an application is due next week for a New Freedom Grant of about $30,000 through the Federal Transit Administration.
City council members will act on the grant application Tuesday.
DMT received $30,000 in grant money last year to improve the bus stop at DACC.
Brazda said the sidewalk from the college buildings will be extended to Main Street, near Indiana Street, and a pad and shelter will be added.
“We’re out for bids for the shelter,” Brazda said.
The Illinois Department of Transportation also is reviewing the project, which could be completed in late March or early April.
Brazda said new funding received would be used to construct a new bus shelter at Danville High School, near Danville Housing Authority offices or near medical buildings on Logan Avenue.
Plans for a new shelter and pad at Vermilion Gardens have proved not to be feasible right now due to grade issues. It requires more engineering work, he said.
Local matching funds for the New Freedom grant will come from state toll revenue credits.
According to the Federal Transit Administration, the New Freedom formula grant program aims to provide additional tools to overcome existing barriers facing Americans with disabilities seeking integration into the work force and full participation in society.
Lack of adequate transportation is a primary barrier to work for individuals with disabilities.
The 2000 Census showed that only 60 percent of people between the ages of 16 and 64 with disabilities are employed.
The New Freedom formula grant program seeks to reduce barriers to transportation services and expand the transportation mobility options available to people with disabilities beyond the requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990.
