Hoopeston council OKs sewer line

HOOPESTON — City council members unanimously passed a resolution Monday’s authorizing Mayor Bill Crusinberry to enter into an easement agreement with Birkey’s Farm Store,1037 S. Dixie Highway.

The easement will allow Birkey’s to install a sewer line and connect to the city’s line.

According to Crusinberry, three and a half years ago an EPA team canvassed the whole country to look at businesses with floor drains to see what happened to the run off from these drains. Birkey’s drained into a leach field. The runoff had to be changed to comply with EPA regulations. Birkey’s representatives and the mayor discussed what could be done.

"For the City of Hoopeston to run a sewer to Birkey’s was very cost prohibitive," Crusinberry said. Discussions have been ongoing between Birkey’s and the city.

After receiving a letter from the EPA asking where the business was in complying with its request, Birkey’s contacted Crusinberry again with a plan. Birkey’s agreed to pay for the line to the Hoopeston sewer system near the old Baer’s Trailer Park and obtained easements across other properties.

"There is no cost to the city," Crusinberry said, " except in waiving the tap fees."

City attorney Scott Perkins added that the line would remain a private line and Birkey’s would maintain it.

In other business, Crusinberry said the Keep America Beautiful raffle raised $5,000 for new Christmas lighting and decorations for downtown. He added the Chamber of Commerce donated to the fund as well as receiving other donations to purchase the new decorations.

Crusinberry said the Christmas tree was relocated to City Hall to give it more visibility.
