Library book/film series continues
DANVILLE — The Danville Public Library continues its “Great Books to Great Films” series on at 6:30 p.m. Monday with a free showing of the 1944 thriller “Double Indemnity” in the first-floor meeting room.
A shady insurance salesman schemes with his lover to kill her husband in this gritty crime classic.
Director Billy Wilder and novelist Raymond Chandler scripted from James M. Cain’s 1935 novel, and the film stars Fred MacMurray, Barbara Stanwyck and Edward G. Robinson.
Viewers who know MacMurray only from TV’s “My Three Sons” are in for a surprise.
The screening is free and open to the public, and no registration is required. Copies of the book may be borrowed from the library for free or may be purchased at the checkout desk through an arrangement with Blue Kangaroo Books.
The screening is the 10th in the library’s year-long book-to-film series. Each month, participants read a classic novel and view a film adaptation of that book. All screenings begin at 6:30 p.m. on the second Monday of each month, with informal discussion immediately following the movies facilitated by library staff. The series is made possible by a grant from the Danville Library Foundation.
For more information, contact the Audiovisual Department at 477-5224 or visit the Web site http://www.danville.lib.il.us/booktofilm.htm for a schedule of upcoming screenings and links about the selections.
The library is located at 319 N. Vermilion St. in Danville. Library hours are 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
Anyone may use the library’s materials and services in the building without a library card. Persons wishing to borrow library materials must obtain a library card. The library honors cards from all Illinois public libraries.
