VEEDERSBURG, Ind. — Town Marshal Neil Beck explained to town council members Tuesday evening the department can get four new duty weapons for $868 from the Stephen R. Jenkins Co. of Indianapolis.
Although the department had considered getting eight new handguns, Beck said that it was easier financially to just get four new duty weapons and use their old revolvers as reserves. Beck said he also received pricing from O’Herrons of Danville, but said Jenkins offered the better deal.
Council members approved allowing the town to sell the four old .40 caliber semi-automatic pistols as surplus property. Beck said several people already have expressed interest in the old guns. The council discussed selling the surplus handguns with a sealed bid auction, but decided to wait until the next meeting before making a final decision.
In other business, council members:
-- Will advertise for four summer help positions with the town. Three of the positions will be for general laborers. One position is for part-time help at the waste water plant for a person with knowledge of mechanics.
-- Learned from Superintendent Paul Keeling that due to a seal failure a water pump had to be repaired at the pump station for $3,097.30 by Midwest Electric of Danville. Keeling said that the pump is more than four years old and would have cost more than $20,000 to replace.
-- Learned from Keeling that he will check town streets to see which ones are in most need of repair. The street crew will perform pothole patching as needed.
-- Heard from animal control officer Jim Abernathy the town currently has one dog available for adoption. Abernathy be-lieves the dog was dumped by its previous owner.
-- Heard from Abernathy that he purchased a cat trap from Powell’s in Covington. The cat trap is available for use by anyone in town who requests it.
-- Received information from Charlie Gossett of AFLAC on supplemental insurance for town employees. The town would pay nothing to AFLAC, but would help set up payroll deductions for employees that wanted supplemental insurance through AFLAC. Gossett explained that the policyholder decides how the supplemental insurance is used. The council tabled a decision about using AFLAC until the next meeting.
-- Listened to concerns from resident Don Furr about a sunken manhole near his property at Keeling and Homestead streets. Keeling will take a look at the problem this morning and put a barricade up until his department is able to put asphalt over the manhole cover.
