Cayuga grants deadline extension

BY ANNE SCHRADER

CAYUGA, Ind. — Town council members granted an extension Thursday to the contractors building the new firehouse. The project now is slated to be completed by May 21.

Akers Construction had requested the extension due to bad weather this winter.

"Nobody thought we were going to have that bad of a winter," said councilman Charley Craft. "The last 10 years, we just haven’t had weather like that."

The inside of the building should be completed by the original completion date of April 9, but excavating for concrete work outside is proving to be a hindrance due to wet conditions.

Mark Swingle, of Swingle Excavating, said he anticipates being able to start moving dirt next week.

"There’s no reason why it shouldn’t be done by May 21," said council president Ronnie Brink.

In other business, the council:

-- Heard the park board has signed an agreement with Kelly Miller Circus for two performances under the big top on May 4. The park will receive a percentage of tickets sold.

-- Heard from town marshal Wayne Sager that he anticipates hearing whether the police department has been awarded a grant to purchase a new vehicle by the end of this month.
