Covington looks at middle school

COVINGTON, Ind. — The Covington School Board spotlighted Covington Middle School on Monday night.

Middle School Principal Steve Reynolds welcomed board members, who met in the middle school library and introduced the three groups to be highlighted: the language arts department, the technology class and the moderately mentally handicapped program.

Superintendent Kirk Booe said that he appreciates the language arts department for taking the initiative and using testing data to improve future test scores.

In other business, school board members:

-- Extended the school corporation's agreement with Administrator Assistance to include up to 75 hours up to July 1, 2010 and beyond if required.

-- Accepted the resignation of Marty LaFoe as vocational bus driver. Booe said that the position already is being advertised and deadline for applications is Friday.

-- Approved the Covington High School Course Guide as presented. Booe said two changes were made to the guide. Algebra now will be offered as a one-year course only and biology will be offered to freshmen and sophomores.

-- Approved coaching positions for the spring sports season including Troy Bever as assistant baseball coach; Keddy Sowers, assistant softball coach; Trevor Dickerson, middle school boys track coach; and Cristin McManomy, middle school girls track coach.

-- Learned the search for the new high school principal continues and the corporation will accept applications until the first week of March.

-- Learned all the school corporation's flex days have been used for snow days. If the school corporation has to take more snow days, it will have to have make-up days on May 28, June 1 and June 2.
