Illinois tax form requires PIN number

DANVILLE — A change in the Illinois income tax form this year might have some tax filers puzzled.

It is the Parcel Index Number, which is required of all property owners when filing for credit.

“It is the 10-digit number in the upper right-hand corner of your tax bill,” said Nancy Towner, a master tax adviser at H&R; Block on North Vermilion Street. “We can access your number because we have paid a registration fee with the treasurer’s office.”

But those who file their own taxes must be sure they have the number, which can be obtained from the Vermilion County treasurer’s office.

“Many people don’t realize it is required,” Vermilion County Treasurer Sue Stine said. “It has never been a requirement.”

Stine isn’t sure why the PIN number is required, but it originated with the Illinois Department of Revenue.

“That’s a big change for Illinois,” said Philip Muehl, a partner with Clifton Gunderson and Co. in Danville.

Homeowners who have a mortgage on their home may have their taxes paid through an escrow account. If they do not get a tax bill, they should contact the treasurer’s office for the number.

“If you don’t have it, you can’t file taxes without it,” Towner said.

Towner said the credit on unemployment payments in Illinois has changed, which would allow for a $72 credit.

“In Indiana, you have to put unemployment back in as income,” she said. “They want to see the big picture before figuring credit.”

Muehl said some changes on the federal tax form include an energy credit up to $1,500. An expansion of the home buyer credit allows for a $6,500 credit for five out of eight years.

“For those who don’t itemize, there is an opportunity to get a standard deduction on sales tax,” he said.

“We have some people who are really anxious to get (the taxes) done,” he said.

Towner said filers can expect a direct deposit within a week, while a check mailed to you would take two to three weeks.

“This is helping everyone,” she said.
