Restaurant opens in Westville

WESTVILLE — A cozy log cabin has cropped up in Westville and is a restaurant serving both breakfast and lunch fare, along with unique coffee drinks.

Stone Mountain Caffé  opened Monday to a strong breakfast crowd, with everyone warm inside the little cabin, both from the inviting setting and the home-cooked food.

Owner Debbie Bannon explained the reasons behind the restaurant name and building style choice.

“The reason I called it Stone Mountain Caffé’ is because everywhere I go, I get a stone,” Bannon said.

When she went to visit her aunt in New Mexico, she realized how much she loved the mountains and she wanted to tie the two, the stones and mountains, together.

Her choice to build the restaurant as a cabin, instead of a brick or normal stick building, comes from her love of the country.

“We have enough tin buildings,” Michael Kantout of Westville said. “This fits in with the community better.”

Michael, along with wife Sherry Kantout, were eating breakfast in the restaurant Monday morning. They live nearby.

“We got to watch them build it from our kitchen window,” Kantout said.

The duo ate ham, eggs, hash browns, biscuits and gravy.

“It was all good,” said Michael. “The service was excellent.”

Bannon has been dreaming about this for years.

“I’ve been planning to get my own restaurant business for 25 years,” Bannon said, who had worked at Steak n’ Shake for 15 years.

Her decision to place the restaurant in Westville was an easy one, having lived there for 25 years.

“I wanted to stay here because I love this little town,” Bannon said. “I try to do all my business in Westville.”

The restaurant will serve breakfast and lunch, with daily specials Tuesday through Thursday. Friday, the special will be chef’s choice.

Those specials will vary with the season — chicken and noodles, beef Manhattan, spaghetti, taco salad and others.

A salad bar is available every day and soups vary. Monday’s menu featured soups of broccoli cheese, chili and vegetable and sandwiches of Italian beef, chicken salad, quesadilla and paninis.

A specialty of Stone Mountain Caffé is its coffee drinks, made to order. Lattes, cappuccinos and teas, hot or cold, are all served.

A drive-through window on the north side of the cabin also was installed, to make on-the-go easy for those who want to stop by for a bagel and coffee in the morning. For faster service with bigger orders, call ahead at 267-7540.

The Kantouts said they were happy to see the restaurant open and plan to come quite often.

“And do a lot of carry out,” Sherry Kantout added.
