DANVILLE — The final phase of the East Main Street widening project has been awarded to a contractor.
Illinois Department of Transportation officials announced that Cross Construction of Urbana was the low bidder.
The $6.9 million project is expected to begin early next year.
According to Illinois Department of Transportation, District 5 acting program development engineer Craig Emberton, the project award letter went out on Dec. 20.
“It probably should go sometime early spring, to start to work on it,” Emberton said.
There were three bidders for Phase III of the Main Street widening project from east of National Avenue to east of Kansas Avenue.
Other bidders were Duce Construction Co. with a bid of $8.4 million and Feutz Contractors, Inc. with a bid of $7.1 million.
Land acquisition was needed for almost 80 parcels for this third phase of the project. Land acquisition was estimated at $300,000. Most of the land was needed for temporary easements for construction, according to IDOT officials.
The East Side Tap building will be demolished to straighten the jog that exists from Iowa Street to the VA entrance. Vehicles will be able to exit the VA and travel straight across Main Street.
Construction was expected to cost $6.2 million for the widening, resurfacing, curb and gutter. The project will add a bi-directional turn lane and modernize traffic signals.
With weather permitting, the project could be completed next year. Some preparation work could begin in February or March, Emberton said.
IDOT began widening Main Street in 2003.
The final section runs from National Avenue, near DACC, to Lick Creek, near Kansas Avenue.
Widening and resurfacing will occur on 0.97 mile of roadway.
Utility adjustments cost $85,000.
The total project cost is about $8.4 million.
Partial city costs, totaling $76,360, will be for traffic signals at the Veterans Affairs Illiana Health Care System and Iowa Street, Danville Area Community College and Indiana Avenue and at Oregon Street; highway signal interconnect; sidewalks; and highway lighting.
