Schlarman Academy will join Catholic schools across the country to celebrate the 2013 Catholic Schools Week, which starts Sunday and runs through Friday.
The theme for Catholic Schools Week 2013 is “Catholic Schools Raise the Standards.”
Catholic schools are noted for their academic excellence and high moral standards. This year’s theme celebrates the constant attention Catholic educators pay to increasing the learning and growth in faith of all students.
The theme highlights the launch of a new initiative, the National Standards and Benchmarks for Effective Catholic Elementary and Secondary Schools, to ensure consistent high standards at Catholic schools across the country. Catholic educators also are participating in a nationwide education initiative for all schools called the Common Core State Standards.
Catholic schools are known for their high level of academic achievement and high graduation rates.
Nationally, 99.4 percent of students at Catholic high schools graduate compared to 75.5 percent of students at public schools. Of these graduates, 84.9 percent go on to college compared to 39.5 percent of public school graduates.
Catholic schools enroll nearly half of all students in parochial schools nationwide, 42.8 percent. Other religious schools enroll 37.3 percent and non-sectarian schools have 20 percent of the private school students.
Tuition seldom covers the cost of a Catholic education. Dioceses, parishes, schools and benefactors must make up the difference. At the elementary level, the typical parish school tuition is $3,673 while the cost to educate each student is $5,387. The typical Catholic high school tuition is $8,182 while the per-pupil cost is $10,228.
In addition to providing quality education, Catholic schools offer economic benefits to the nation. Combined, Catholic elementary and secondary schools save taxpayers an estimated $20 billion a year in education costs. They employ more than 151,000 full-time staff members.

Firefighters from at least five departments battle a blaze today at a tire business on Hoopeston's south side. Areas around the scene were evacuated due to the dense smoke the fire created. No injuries had been reported as of 7:30 a.m.
