CAYUGA, Ind. —
Some sports memories stay in a person’s life forever.
Such is the case with Ken “Cruiser” Gentrup of Covington, Ind., who led the Lady Falcons at North Vermillion High School through a 50-game winning streak.
Gentrup tells the story of the team’s impressive season, along with co-author Shaun C. Kilgore of Danville, in the new book, “Remember the Ride: The Story of North Vermillion Girls Basketball’s Sensational Four-Year Run.”
The co-authors will sign copies of the book during a game Friday night at North Vermillion. The book signing will coincide with a 10th anniversary ceremony honoring the girls who played on the 2002 state championship team.
Books will be available at the signing and also may be purchased online, with other booksellers to follow in the near future.
The book is being published by Kilgore’s company, Founders House Publishing.
“I’m very pleased with it,” Kilgore said. “Buzz is building up around it.”
The teams had “a ton of loyal followers” during those four years, he said, adding it was big news for a small school to do so well on the state level.
The girls not only made history, but they drew together the community and others along the way.
“Remember the Ride” details the exploits of the Lady Falcons basketball teams and the period from 2000 through 2004. During that time, the girls’ teams, coached by Gentrup, achieved impressive scores and gained titles, including the Indiana Class A state championship in 2002. They were runners-up the following year and reached regionals the year after. Plus, the girls maintained a 50-game winning streak.
The book recalls those days from Gentrup’s perspective. He kept a daily journal of practices and games while he was head basketball coach, and a scrapbook.
Gentrup said he’s happy with the book, adding, “I think it will be a nice memento for the girls and their fans and anyone who followed us through the season.”
Most of the girls are expected to be present Friday night, as well as managers and coaches, Gentrup said. About 17 people will be honored.
He also noted the book will have its first release Friday night, so nobody has had a sneak peek at it yet. However, he expects the reception to be positive.
Someone who sits down with the book can probably finish it in three or four hours, he said.
This is the second book released by Gentrup and Kilgore. The first was “Heaven’s Point Guard: The Kirk Gentrup Story,” released in late 2010 by Founders House.
The book is about Gentrup’s 16-year-old son, Kirk, a star athlete at North Vermillion who was killed by lightning in 1995. Gentrup was working as assistant baseball coach that day, when the accident occurred on the ball field.
The school’s gymnasium is named after Kirk.
After retiring from coaching and his job at TeePak, Gentrup opened an antiques shop. The business, Glory Daze, is located in downtown Danville.
