DLO to present Sondheim’s ‘A Little Night Music’

DANVILLE — Danville Light Opera will bring a Stephen Sondheim musical to the dinner-theater stage again this season with the production of “A Little Night Music.”

Its last performance was “Sweeney Todd,” which also was written by Sondheim.

The dinner-theater will begin at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 17 and 18 and at 12:30 p.m. Feb. 19 in the Danville Area Community College Bremer Auditorium. Dinner will be catered by Dana Wheeler of the Danville Boat Club. Chittick Family Eye Care is the business sponsor.

Greg Williams, director, is excited about this production.

“This show is on my bucket list,” he said. “I’ve wanted to do it forever. This show has more challenges than an average musical, but it’s also more melodic than some of Sondheim’s other works.

“We are especially delighted to have Dr. Joe Grant as our music director,” Williams added. Grant is a former Danville High School choral director and a retiree of the University of Illinois Music Department.

The song “Send in the Clowns,” made famous by singer Judy Collins, will be the musical selection most familiar to the audience, according to Williams.

The orchestra is composed of 10 string instruments, and the majority of costumes will be on loan from the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts in Urbana.

Cast members include Bruce Stelzer as Mr. Lindquist; Eve Harwood as Mrs. Nordstrom; Jeanne Dunn as Mrs. Anderssen; Craig Krukewitt as Mr. Erlanson; Mallory Williams as Mrs. Segstrom; Bailey Williams as Fredrika Armfeldt; and Linnea Leatherman as Madame Armfeldt.

Others in the cast are Thomas Nicol as Frid, the butler; Brett Wayne Nickle as Henrik Egerman; Molly Netter as Anne Egerman; Andrew Peters as Fredrik Egerman; and Chelsea Collier as Petra.

Additional cast members include Marsha Williams as Desiree Armfeldt; Nancy Keener as Malla, the maid; Jason Asaad as Count Carl-Magnus Malcolm; and Trudy DeRoeck as Countess Charlottee Malcolm.

Brian Morris is the stage manager, Julia Megan-Sullivan is assisting with choreography, and Betty Grove is the piano accompanist.

The plot is a complex love story. Fredrik Egerman is happy in his marriage to a 17-year-old virgin, Anne. The only problem is, she’s been a virgin for the entire 11 months of their marriage. Being a bit restless, Fredrik goes to see an old flame, the famous actress Desiree Armfeldt. Desiree is getting tired of her life and is thinking of settling down, despite Fredrik’s marriage and her own married lover, Count Carl-Magnus. She gets her mother to invite the Egermans to her country estate for the weekend. But when Carl-Magnus and his wife, Charlotte, appear, things begin to get farcical.

Jason Asaad, who plays Count Carl-Magnus, said, “The dynamic essence of the music kind of brings everything together in a good way. The music is challenging, but we are working well together.”

This will be Asaad’s 13th DLO production since 1996.

“The DLO gives actors the opportunity to do shows that other acting companies wouldn’t take on,” he added.

Chelsea Collier, who plays Petra, called this musical “a traditional love story with a lot of songs done in unison. The music has very light quality to it.”
