CAYUGA, Ind. — Town council members heard concerns Thursday night about a Community Action Program income-based rental housing neighborhood that has been constructed on the former Cayuga Elementary School property.
"I'm a little concerned about the quality of residents over there," said resident Jerry Hayes, adding that he wasn't certain how much control the town had over the housing, but he wanted to bring his concerns to the attention of the council.
Hayes says he is concerned about meth and former inmates living in the housing development.
Council president Ron Brink said he will contact Community Action to let them know there is public concern, but that it is up to CAP to screen potential renters.
Hayes also brought up concerns about lack of street lighting in the development.
"There's a lot of young kids up in that neighborhood now," he said. "The school buses start running on Monday and we're not quite breaking daylight at 7 or 7:30 in the morning."
Brink said he is aware that residents have complained about the lack of lighting.
Councilman Charley Craft stated that the town was responsible for installing the street lights on one of the three streets, and CAP was responsible for the other two.
"I'm sorry, we should have had that done," Craft said.
In other business, the council con ducted a hearing for the 2010 budget. The budget will be adopted at the Sept. 10 meeting.
