Hillsboro dishes up barbecue

HILLSBORO, Ind. — For 52 years, Hillsboro has dished up huge helpings of beef barbecue and provided entertainment for the young to the young at heart.

Water Street will be closed Friday and Saturday for the Hillsboro Booster Club Barbecue.

“Several generations have kept it going,” said Mark McGrady, longtime president of the Boosters who is stepping down after this year. “I hope they keep it going.”

While the beef barbecue is the main attraction, bingo, music, children’s games and the parade attract festival attendees. A talent contest and a dance on Saturday are other features.

The serving of beef barbecue dinners and sandwiches begins at 11 a.m. EDT both days.

“We probably serve around 1,000 pounds of beef,” McGrady. The sauce remains a secret the Boosters do not share.

McGrady said the children’s games on Saturday are popular.

“We don’t charge the kids,” he said. “We give them money to participate.”

The Highway 341 Band on Friday night has its own following. The Honky Tonk Trio is a new feature on Saturday night this year.

“The only fund-raiser is the food,” McGrady said. “We are a very family focused event, and we usually have good weather.”
