Hoopeston council hears water complaints

HOOPESTON — City council members discussed complaints from residents of rust in the city water and the odor permeating Hoopeston at Tuesday’s council meeting.

Alderman Bill McElhaney said the reason there is rust in the city water is that the city recently had two breaks in a water main in the same spot.

"It’s (breaks in the water main) going to move rust where it wasn’t before," McElhaney said and he added his apology to the residents.

The smell, McElhaney said, was the ponds reacting to the warm weather and Hoopeston Foods had a problem that was adding to the mix.

Mayor Bill Crusinberry said Hoopeston Foods was aware of the problem and "they are expediting it" to fix the problem.

In other council business:

Council members approved unanimously a conditional use for a Beauty Salon at 815 E. Elm St., for Lisa Clem. A letter will be sent, according to Crusinberry, to inform Clem.

Learned that 10 health proposals for insurance for the city have been narrowed down from 75. The finance committee will meet at 5:30 p.m. Monday at City Hall to discuss the 10 companies the employee representatives decided as the best offers.

Tom Bookwalter recommended the city look at the ordinance for burning . Yard waste is the only thing that is supposed to be burned in the city. The city ordinance should be changed to follow the state ordinance.

NewWave customer service manager Monique Lusk commented that NewWave would like to be more involved within the city and offered handouts to aldermen.

City council members will meet at 7 p.m. Dec. 18 in City Hall, 301 W. Main St.
