WILLIAMSPORT, Ind. — School has been out only a couple of weeks, but Warren County 4-H members are preparing to show their animals and other projects at the 92nd annual Warren County 4-H Fair.
For the past several years, the Warren County fair is the first one in Indiana.
Katie Ingerson, intern with the Warren County Purdue Extension office, said some like the earlier fair, while others don’t.
“I see both sides,” she said. “It teaches us all time management.”
While the fair officially doesn’t open until Tuesday, pre-fair activities get under way Friday with project registrations and judging.
The fair queen pageant will be the night before the opening of the fair at the Seeger Memorial High School Fine Arts Center. Sixteen girls are competing for the title, the most in several years.
Ingerson, who participated in 4-H and then worked summers in the extension office while attending Ball State University, said 4-H membership has increased this year, especially at the mini-4-H level, where it has increased by 20 to 80 participants.
“This is very promising,” she said. “We are hoping they will continue in 4-H.”
Swine is the biggest project at the fair, Ingerson said. Three hundred heads of swine could be exhibited at the fair.
Photography is the biggest project among non-livestock entries.
Ingerson said one change at the fair this year is that the livestock auction on June 18 will be a half hour earlier at 7 p.m. EDT.
The Junior Leaders are sponsoring a blood drive from 5-8:30 p.m. Tuesday. They have teamed up with the Indiana Blood Center, which will be on site for the blood drive. For every two blood donations, the Junior Leaders will receive a pass to Kings Island, which is the group’s completion trip.
The 4-H program has teamed up with the Williamsport Parks program in planting a garden. The kids will show off their garden during the fair.
One of the special treats at the Warren County 4-H Fair is the food building, which will feature a different special each night of the fair. Planned are a hog roast, chicken night, fish night, steak night and ribeye steak sandwich night.
The fair ends June 18 with a fireworks display.
Ingerson said the fair is special.
“It is very exciting,” she said. “We have a great time.”
