COVINGTON, Ind. — Monday evening, the Covington school board heard from Superintendent Kirk Booe that he predicts the tax rate for 2013 will be about 94.5 cents for each $100 of assessed property value.
The corporation has not received its state-approved budget order yet, but it has received its Notice of Final Budget Recommendation from the Department of Local Government Finance. Booe estimates the corporation’s assessed value will be $229,640,637 with a tax levy of $2,169,932. Based on those numbers, and if approved by the state, Booe estimates the tax rate will be roughly 94.5 cents.
For comparison, Booe gave the board tax rates from the previous four years. The tax rate was $1.01 in 2009; $1.24 in 2010; $1.07 in 2011; and $1.05 in 2012.
“We have to be happy with where we have come in four years,” Booe said. In 2011, the state average tax rate was 94 cents for each $100 of assessed property value. Booe attributes the lower tax rate to the corporation having been able to pay off one of its major debts, paying off a bus and restructuring the remaining debts this past year.

Appointed Nina Wright to the Mound Township school board seat; elected Jeff Dennis as school board president; elected Randy Randles as school board vice president; elected Nina Wright as school Board secretary; elected Jeff Dennis as president of the board of finance; elected Carolyn Lloyd as secretary of the board of finance; approved Trudie Dillon as corporation treasurer; and retained Henthorn, Harris, and Welliever of Crawfordsville, Ind., as legal counsel for the school corporation in 2013.
Approved Chad Tanner and DJ Linville as sixth-grade girls basketball coaches.
Approved the out-of-state field trip request for fourth-grade students to attend a program on eagles and birds of prey at Danville Area Community College.
Appointed Cathy Waclaw to a four-year term on the Covington/Veedersburg library board.
Learned from Booe the corporation will received a 2.25 percent increase in funding in 2013. Booe said the increase can be “largely attributed to an increase in the student population. Last school year’s average daily membership (ADM) was 882 students and this school year’s ADM is 891 students.
