Celebration set for seniors

VEEDERSBURG, Ind. — Calling all Fountain County senior citizens.

A free Seniors Celebrate is planned for 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. EDT Tuesday at the community building at the Fountain County Fairgrounds to recognize healthy lifestyles.

"There will be presentations, giveaways and a lunch," said Jane Bowers, director of the Friendship Circle Center at Covington. "We want to give them some healthy habits too."

The Covington Christian School Choir will sing and the Fountain County Master Gardeners will have a presentation.

Two classes will be offered in the morning, and entertainment will be provided during the luncheon. The Fountain County Senior Task Force is sponsoring the event.

"We have done two of these in Warren County, and we wanted to bring it to Fountain County," said Bowers, who is a member of the task force.

Twenty-five vendors that cater to senior citizens will have displays.

Ron Colson attended his first Indianapolis 500 when he was 7 years old. That was 66 years ago. He’s missed only one of the Memorial Day weekend classics since then, and that was in 1950 when he had the mumps. He grudgingly handed his prized ticket over to his uncle that year. Luckily for the 10-year-old, it was one of the few early years when the race was televised, and the family friends who owned Crane’s TV Shop in Hillsboro, Ind., invited him to come watch it with them.
