Maple syrup featured

WESTVILLE — The annual Maple Syrup Open House, hosted by the Vermilion County Conservation District, will be 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday in the Pioneer Homestead Area at Forest Glen Preserve.

The Sugar Bush, the building in which maple syrup is made, as well as the Pioneer Cabin, will be open. Interpreters will be on hand to demonstrate the maple syrup-making process.

Visitors also can enjoy a pancake and sausage dinner served with Forest Glen’s maple syrup in the Gannett Outdoor Education Center. Tickets are $5 for adults and $2.50 for children younger than 12. Dinner will be served from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

If conditions permit, syrup may be available to purchase beginning at 11 a.m. No advance orders for syrup will be taken.

For information, call Forest Glen Preserve at 662-2142 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.

  • Georgetown council to sell water to coal mine

    What the village of Homer was unwilling to do, the city of Georgetown has agreed to do. Specifically, city council members approved a contract Monday with Sunrise Coal LLC of Terre Haute to provide, initially, 300,000 gallons of production water a day. After the mine is up and running, the city could boost that supply to 500,000 gallons of water a day.
