Ted Baer, originally from the Danville area, is the owner of Baer’s Time Shop in the Village Mall. His shop offers watch repair services and carries a selection of timepieces.
But the time is not the only thing shoppers will find in Baer’s shop.
The walls of his shop contain photographs that highlight some of the many experiences Baer has had in his lifetime.
Baer has lived in New York and California.
Before he got into the timepiece business, he worked in broadcasting for more than 30 years.
During his broadcasting career, Baer was a radio show host, did voices for commercials and even worked for Merv Griffin.
“(I) helped out a little here, a little there,” he said, modestly.
Baer always tried to make his radio broadcasts fun for his listeners.
One time he actually flew from New York to Danville just to take a guest to eat at Steak ‘n Shake. The trip settled a better burger debate between the two and also provided a charity opportunity.
Baer brought 100 steak burgers back to New York and sold them at $25 apiece.
He gave all the profits to charity.
And the burgers sold out.
“I just had fun,” he said
In October, Baer will receive a New York Broadcast Legends award to commemorate his time on the air.
Along with his work in broadcasting, Baer is an avid musician.
He has played the piano, bass and violin for more than 50 years.
He has played in many groups, including Jo Frasier and the Knockouts. He even played the piano for “The Rosie O’Donnell Show.”
Baer also has six children — three boys and three girls. The youngest is 14, and the oldest is 46.
Baer moved back to Danville to get his children out of big cities, but he does not intend to stay here after he retires.
“I miss New York,” he said
Although he loves his work, the hours are long. And Baer has survived two heart attacks and two surgeries.
“(I) want to play my music, play my piano, enjoy life,” he said.
