Oakwood clears way for block party

OAKWOOD — On Monday night the Oakwood Village Board granted a request from the Oakwood Christian Church to block Scott Street from Longstreth to Finley Street on Aug. 30.

The street will be blocked from 6-8 p.m. for the church’s block party.

The board also gave Mayor Tom Cook permission to search for a replacement chest freezer for the one in the park pavilion.

The Oakwood Youth Baseball League and the Youth Football League have each agreed to contribute $200 toward the cost of a new freezer.

Cook has price quotes from Dick Van Dyke Appliance in Champaign for $648 plus a $35 delivery charge; Sears in Danville for $664 plus a $65 refundable delivery charge; and Bob Campbell Sales and Service in Danville for $719.

Several board members expressed a desire to purchase the freezer from Bob Campbell Sales and Service due to prompt response on service calls in the past. The board left the matter to Cook’s discretion due to the urgency of having the freezer on hand before the first home youth football game on Aug. 24.

In other board action, trustees:

-- Approved a line item transfer of $1,600 from the general fund to the sewer fund to meet monthly bills. A discussion was had over the possibility of needing to raise sewer rates due to increasing costs for chemicals at the treatment plant.

-- Learned the village engineer has secured the purchase, at scrap metal prices, of the guard rails currently being replaced along Interstate 74 to be used on the Lee Street project. Use of these guard rails instead of purchasing new ones will save an estimated $20,000 to $30,000 in overall project costs.

WHAT’S NEXT

The Oakwood Village Board will meet at 7 p.m. September 8 in the village office.
