DANVILLE — The local man accused in a fatal holiday shooting is on his way back to Danville.
Joseph T. King, 19, of Tilton was arrested early Saturday morning by Erlanger, Ky., police officers on a warrant issued in connection with the shooting death of Alberto Cardoza on New Year’s Eve.
King was scheduled and appeared in court Monday. Director of Public Safety Larry Thomason confirmed King waived extradition.
Thomason said he expects to be returned to Vermilion County to the Public Safety Building sometime today.
A warrant for King was issued the same day the body of Cardoza was found outside a home in the 700 block of Bryan Avenue. The discovery was made just minutes after midnight and Cardoza was pronounced dead at Provena United Samaritans Medical Center about 30 minutes later.
He died of multiple gun shot wounds.
In Vermilion County Circuit Court on Monday, a man was charged with driving King to Erlanger, Ky.
Terry Chism, 23, of the first block of Melody Lane, was arraigned on a charge of concealing or aiding a fugitive, a Class 4 felony. Chism is accused of helping King on Friday.
A preliminary hearing for Chism, who is being held on $30,000 bond, is scheduled for Jan. 15.
