Covington establishes tree fund

COVINGTON, Ind. — Covington established a tree endowment fund through the community foundation Monday evening.

¡§We want to thank the community foundation for their participation in setting up the tree fund,¡¨ said Mayor Brad Crain. ¡§Anyone interested can donate money to the tree fund and help us replace the trees that have to be taken out sometime in 2009 and 2010.¡¨

Many of the trees along U.S. Route 136 in Covington will be removed due to the state¡¦s project to relocate water lines along the highway.

In other business, city council members:

ƒÞ Listened to Crain announce his appointments for 2009: Max Keller, mayor pro-tem; Crain, Keller and Jeff Coffing, board of works; Debbie Gurley, collector of utilities; Mark Switzer, councilman over the street department; Coffing, councilman over the electric department, Joe Sare, councilman over the department for water pumping and wastewater treatment; Dale White, councilman over the park; Keller, councilman over the police and fire departments; Dave Clodfelder, electric superintendent; Bob Tanner, street superintendent; Phil Dotson, water pumping superintendent; Greg Myers, wastewater treatment superintendent; Larry Weber, police chief; Rick Talbert, fire chief; Don Crowder, park superintendent; Kedric Sowers Jr, animal control officer; and Richard Rennick Jr , city attorney.

Crain will designate the zoning board at the first meeting in February.

ƒÞ Learned from Tanner that the library has been having its sewer line jamming up due to kids dropping rocks into it. Tanner said that his department took care of their immediate problem, but he informed the library that it will have to hire someone to dig out the line to clean out the rocks.

ƒÞ Learned from Talbert that two firefighters from Covington responded to the call from Delphi on New Year¡¦s Day. The two firefighters worked 12 hours helping to put out a fire on 17,000 bushels of corncobs.

ƒÞ Approved Crowder¡¦s request to use $1,200 to $1,300 from the park¡¦s soft drink fund to pay for improvements on a park slide. Crowder received the verbal quote from JTEC of Tilton to sand blast and paint the slide at the park that was installed in 1996. Crowder explained that the paint on the slide is chipping off in some spots and just wearing away in others.

ƒÞ Learned from Crowder that Christmas in the Park was successful and that there was no vandalism to any of the displays.

ƒÞ Learned that the city building phones will be checked out by Jim Rittenour of Edwards Communications. Gurley, clerk-treasurer, said that the phones have just not been working well and some cases are broken.

WHAT¡¦S NEXT

The Covington City Council will meet at 7 p.m. EST Jan. 19 at the city building, 1329 Second St.
