VEEDERSBURG, Ind. — Despite the wet weather, Veedersburg officials said Tuesday said they are already working to clean up and repair the town’s streets.

Paul Keeling, street superintendent, told the town council his department already has been out patching streets and determining what streets need paving so work could begin soon.

Keeling said he would like the town to get a street-sweeper this year. The council discussed some initial options, like whether to buy a new or used machine, and Keeling said he would start looking for a street sweeper.

“We are trying to clean up the street”, said town council President Ken Smith. “We are looking into getting a street sweeper that would really help to clean up the gravel and keep the dust down.”

In other business, council members:

-- Learned from Tori Current, pool manager, the upcoming season’s dates, prices and hours. The pool will open June 1 and close Aug. 15. Pool hours are noon to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from 1-5 p.m. Sundays. One day passes to the pool are $1.50 for children ages 5-17 and $2 for adults. Children under age 5 are free. A season pass to the pool is $40 for an individual and $85 for a family of four.

The council approved Current’s request to increase the price of a pool party from $30 to $50 with $25 of the $50 being paid before the party. For parties, previously only one guard was needed for an additional $15, but now two guards at $15 each are required to be on duty at parties for safety purposes. No new lifeguards will be needed this year since most of last year’s lifeguards will be returning.

-- Learned from Keeling that a new merry-go-round is needed at Sterling Park. Keeling estimated a new 8-foot merry-go-round will cost about $2,500. Keeling will get quotes for the next meeting.

-- Received two bids to repair the town’s police car, one from Veedersburg Shell and the other from Don’s Repair of Veedersburg. The decision to accept one of the bids was tabled so repair quotes could be updated to include alignment work.

-- Accepted 15 to 20 trees from Tom Freas of Veedersburg. The trees are red oak, white oak and tulip. The town will use its backhoe to move the trees from Freas’ property to Hub Park.

-- Approved purchasing a 250-foot long strip of curbing to be installed at the ball diamond in Hub Park for $1,200 by Hesler Paving & Contracting Inc of Veedersburg. The curbing will reduce rainwater running from the parking lot onto the field.

-- Announced the town-wide spring cleanup will begin at 7 a.m. June 12, conducted by Phelps Bros Disposal. Anyone who pays for town garbage service can set items out by their curb for the cleanup. The town will send out notices to its customers informing them what items will not be picked up during the cleanup such as appliances containing Freon, concrete or treated lumber.

-- Amended the salary ordinance for part-time workers at the wastewater plant. First-year workers still will earn $9.65 per hour, while veteran workers will earn $11 per hour.

-- Introduced the new zoning board administrator, Marcie Roark. The zoning board administrator administrates and enforces the zoning laws in Veedersburg.

-- Learned the Republican caucus will meet April 23 to select Chris Rahm’s replacement on the town council.

-- Decided to advertise for two summer-help positions with the town’s street department.

-- Learned fire hydrants will be flushed May 2 beginning at 7 a.m.
